Insulation - Attic insulation is measured in terms of R-values. The higher the R-value,
the better the guard against heat loss. For the Rochester area an R value of
49 is
recommended. First determine the current R of your existing insulation and then add more
to bring your attic up to R-49. This will help keep heat from your home from entering your
attic space and melting the snowpack from below.
Ventilation - deficient ventilation can cause warm air to become trapped
in your attic and also melt the roof snowpack. A combination of soffit vents, roof vents,
gable end vents, or ridge venting should be added to insure proper air flow to reduce warm
air from building up in the attic space. In problem areas a more aggressive active
thermostat/humidistat controlled attic ventilator fan may be added.
